Lawn Mowing Methods

Lawn Mowing Advice from Fallas Landscape

Lawn mowing imageThe biggest element of most yards is the grass. Regular lawn maintenance keeps your lawn looking green and healthy, and one of the most important aspects of lawn maintenance is keeping the grass trimmed and even. Here are a few lawn mowing tips from the experts at Fallas Landscape.

VARY YOUR MOWING PATTERNS

When you have to do a task on a regular basis, it can become very easy to do everything the same way every time. However, when it comes to mowing your lawn, you’ll want to switch up your mowing pattern. Cutting the grass in the same pattern every time can compact your soil and cause ruts in the ground, which can damage the overall health of your lawn. Switching your mowing directions every time you mow reduces soil compaction and keeps the grass healthy.

KEEP YOUR BLADES SHARP

Sharp blades on your lawn mower make the entire lawn mowing process much easier. Not only do sharp blades make cutting grass faster and easier, but properly sharpened lawn mower blades also reduce damage to the grass itself. Dull blades tear grass and create a jagged and uneven edge. Damaged grass blades will turn white or brown at the tips from the damage caused by dull blades. Many lawn mower blades are designed to be sharpened, and it is recommended that you sharpen your blades a few times throughout the mowing season. If you find it easier, you can even keep a spare blade available to swap out when the other blade gets dull!

USE THE RIGHT MOWER HEIGHT

It may seem like a smart idea to cut your grass short – the shorter the grass, the longer it would take to grow back, leaving more time between lawn mowing times. Unfortunately, mowing the grass too short can actually do more harm than good. Cutting the grass too short can damage the plant, causing the grass to brown and increasing the risk of soil compaction in the yard. Grass that has been consistently cut too short also has an increased vulnerability to pests and disease, and over time will not grow back as well due to the repeated damage. When trying to figure out the right mower height for your grass, remember the ⅓ rule. Never cut more than ⅓ of the length of the grass blade at any one time.
